The Hibiscus House History

Journey to a Landmark Location

The Hibiscus House boasts a rich history intertwined with the vibrant past of its surroundings. It was originally constructed in 1923 by William H. Dowling, owner of the once bustling Dowling Lumber Co. in Slater, Florida. It’s said that Henry Ford loved to go to Slater and watch the sawmill operations there, which makes it even more meaningful that the inn’s current location is now within walking distance of the Edison & Ford Estates.

Following William Dowling’s passing in the late 1930s, his widow, Mrs. Hallie Dowling, relocated the house from its original location in North Fort Myers to its current River District location in 1946. To achieve this feat, she had the house sawed in half, loaded onto two barges at the foot of Old Bridge Road, and transported along the Caloosahatchee River. The house endured a tumultuous journey, temporarily getting stuck on sandbars before reaching its final destination on McGregor Blvd.

Hallie Dowling lovingly preserved the house and transformed it into a cherished bed and breakfast. Over the years, The Hibiscus House has been known by several names, including the The LI-Inn Sleeps Inn, The Drum House Inn, The Wedding Place, and The Dowling Homestead. Each iteration of this historic home has added to its rich tapestry of coastal charm and Southern hospitality.
